Here at Greatist, we believe in taking a day off. Instead of our regular programming Saturdays, our writers get a chance to write about living the greatist lifestyle and, basically, whatever they want. This is one of those awesome articles. Enjoy!

What is your superhero name? I see superheroes every day at the gym. First there is The Balancer. She does every single exercise on the Bosu ball. This is very tricky. I tried it once and almost broke my ankle. Then there is Upside Down Man. He has these metal boots that he straps on and hangs upside down. The Walker has never done a single exercise to my knowledge. He just walks around the gym. I guess that is his exercise; milling about. There is also Power Reader. He spends an hour on the seated bike reading his newspaper. My favorite is Gadget Guy. He has all the latest in exercise accessories, like the Perfect Pushup, the Ab Wheel, and the T-Core. They look kind of cool in a torturous sort of way. I call the spin instructor The Enforcer. She is actually very nice in person, but once she is in her spin class, she makes us do these standing sprints that make grown men cry.

I don’t know some of their names, but I see them at the gym every day at 5:00 AM, making the effort to do some sort of physical activity. We all have something in common, and not because we’re a little nuts to be in the gym before sunrise. We have each decided to take charge of our own health and fitness by committing to exercise or being active.

When I need that extra motivation to get moving, I tap into the superhero zone, and remind myself that nobody else is going to keep me fit and healthy. When I am a superhero for my own health, it helps me to be a super mom and a super wife.

The best part about being your own superhero is that it doesn’t matter what type of exercise or activity you do, as long as you do it consistently. The Walker gets way more cardiovascular benefits walking about the gym, than if he were just sitting around watching TV or sleeping.

You don’t even have to join a gym. Don’t let me forget about Pajama Man. I see him every morning on my way to the gym in his polka dot pajamas walking his dog.

It’s time to become the superhero of your life and start making small, positive changes each day, so that you can take charge of your own health. What will your superhero name be? I think mine will be Greatist Girl.
