Raise your hand if you’ve ever been inspired by a multivitamin?

*crickets*

Yup, that’s about what we expected. Popping that big, chalky multivitamin every morning is definitely everyone’s favorite part of the day.

If you’re burnt out on your supplement routine, maybe it’s time to turn it into a Ritual — the sleek and science-based multivitamin that’s making taking your vitamins kinda exciting again.

Here’s what you need to know about Ritual as a brand and its products, plus some alternatives to consider if you don’t think it’s the right pick for you.

Pros

  • Pretty personalized. Ritual offers different multivitamin and protein products based on age, sex, and reproductive status, so you’re really getting the nutrients you need.
  • All in one. Ritual’s unique formulation means you’re getting all the nutrients you need in a single product.
  • No unnecessary ingredients. Ritual’s multivitamins contain only nutrients that many people may not get enough of instead of a long list of vitamins you might not need.
  • Vegetarian- and vegan-friendly. All of Ritual’s multivitamins are vegan (they use omega-3s sourced from algae instead of fish), and its protein powders are plant-based.
  • Third-party tested. Ritual third-party tests all of its products. One of its products (Essential for Her 18+) is even USP-verified.
  • Convenient company policies. Shipping is free, and discounts are available when you buy multiple products. Plus, getting vitamins shipped directly to you is convenient AF.

Cons

  • Not *totally* personalized. Competitors offer more products and more opportunities for personalization — like quizzes or tests to determine which nutrients you might be lacking.
  • Flavor is hit-or-miss. Ritual adds mint to its multivitamins to help mask the fishy taste of omega-3s. Some people love it, but some realllly hate it.
  • Can get pricey. If you decide to get vitamins for the whole fam, the cost can really add up fast.
  • Not every product is third-party certified. Ritual says all its products are third-party tested, but only a handful of them have third-party certifications.

Ritual is a multivitamin company that makes the prettiest vitamins, full stop. You’ve probably seen them on Insta, lookin’ like they just *belong* on a hexagon shelf next to a succulent.

It’s a subscription service, but the company offers a refreshing counterpoint to other vitamin subscription services that ask you to take a quiz and then recommend multiple products (which equals multiple pills to take daily).

Instead, Ritual offers smartly crafted multivitamins (read: no unnecessary ingredients) for women and men ages 18+ and 50+, along with a kids’ multivitamin, a teen line for boys and girls 13 and up, and a prenatal and postnatal line.

Additionally, the brand offers daily protein powder for pregnancy and postpartum folks, anyone 18 and up, and anyone 50 and up.

The vitamins use a microbead-in-capsule design to maximize absorption and minimize unpleasant side effects while keeping the number of pills you need to take every day as low as possible.

Prices range from $30 to $40 per month, depending on the product, but you can also get discounts for bundling multiple products. And shipping? Always free.

Let’s get 🎵 Ritual, Ritual 🎵.

Thinkin’ ’bout adding Ritual to your morning ritual? Here’s who might benefit most from the service:

  • Pregnant or postpartum people. Pregnant and postpartum folks have unique nutritional needs. For example, they have higher folic acid needs to support spinal cord development for baby. Ritual’s Essential Prenatal contains methylated folate, an active form of folic acid that’s easy to absorb and use.
  • Vegans and vegetarians. Research suggests that people who eat a fully plant-based diet may be at risk of deficiencies in certain nutrients, like vitamin B12, zinc, and vitamin K. A multivitamin from Ritual (for any age or sex) can cover most of these potential gaps. And the protein powders are fully plant-based too.
  • Older adults. As we get older, it’s more important than ever to make sure we’ve got what we need to keep our bodies and brains on point — and Ritual’s multis for adults 50+ contain omega-3s for heart and brain health and magnesium and vitamin D to support your muscles and bones.
  • People with limited diets. Picky eater? Food allergies? Reducing calories? There are sooo many reasons you, your partner, or your kids may have a limited diet that doesn’t provide all the nutrients you (or they) need. That’s where a multi comes in! Ahhh, to be a 6-year-old living on PB&Js and Flintstones vitamins again…
  • Anyone who wants a convenient supplement option. Finally, if you just want a set-it-and-forget-it vitamin service that sends them straight to your door so you don’t have to worry about it, Ritual is right up your alley.

Concerned about Ritual being legit? Here’s what we found after doing some digging.

Third-party testing

Ritual makes its products in a certified Current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMP) facility, which means its production methods meet Food and Drug Administration (FDA) standards. This is a really good thing!

Plus, all its products are third-party-tested, and some are certified (Essential for Women 18+, Essential Protein Daily Shakes).

Ingredient selection and transparency

Ritual’s vitamins include only nutrients that many people may not get enough of (which is why the ingredient lists seem pared down compared to others). After all, why supplement something you don’t really need?

Ritual also has a transparency process called Made Traceable to share the form, source, supplier, and manufacturing location for each ingredient in its products. You can view this information on the Traceable Ingredients page on Ritual’s website.

Customer reviews

Customer reviews for Ritual are mostly positive. In fact, many of the negative reviews we’ve seen are about the extremely polarizing mint flavor that’s added to most of the vitamins. But TBH, we tried these for ourselves and kinda loved it. To each their own!

Essential for Women Multivitamins

  • Price: $30 to 35 per month
  • Types offered: Multivitamin 18+, Multivitamin 50+
  • Certifications: USP-verified (women’s 18+ only), non-GMO

Description and ingredients: Ritual’s women’s line (their flagship offering) includes multis for ages 18+ and 50+. The 18+ and 50+ vites are pretty similar but have some key differences. Let’s take a look at their nutrients:

18+50+
Vitamin D350 mcg50 mcg
Vitamin E6.7 mg10 mg
Folate1000 mcg400 mcg
Vitamin B128 mcg16 mcg
Iron8 mgN/A
Magnesium30 mg60 mg
Boron0.7 mg1 mg
Omega-3 (DHA)330 mg330 mg
Vitamin K90 mcg100 mcg

You’ll notice that the 18+ contains 8 milligrams (mg) of iron, while the 50+ doesn’t contain any. The 18+ also has a higher dose of folate.

That’s because evidence suggests that menstruating peeps — especially those who have heavy periods — are at a higher risk of iron deficiency. And adequate folate levels are important for a healthy pregnancy (but if you’re not pregnant, you’ll just pee out whatever your bod doesn’t use).

OTOH, the 50+ contains more of certain nutrients. Vitamin B12 and magnesium, for instance, are harder for your body to absorb as you age. Experts believe that increased vitamin K and boron intake can benefit bone health and vitamin E can benefit heart, eye, and brain health.

On top of all that goodness, the women’s 18+ is the first Ritual vitamin to earn verification from the prestigious third-party testing organization United States Pharmacopeia (USP), which is — at least to us supplement nerds — a really big deal.

Basically, USP verification means that the 18+ multivite contains the ingredients (and the potencies of those ingredients) that Ritual says it does and doesn’t contain any harmful contaminants. It also means the vitamins are proven to break down and release into the body and that Ritual makes them in compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices.

Reviews: Ritual sent us a bottle of the 18+ multivitamin to test IRL, and we’re obsessed. We love that you’re filling any nutrient gaps with only two capsules — and the minty flavoring is actually super tasty and refreshing.

The capsules themselves are v pretty. They’re clear, so you can see the little beads and oil floating around inside. Talk about transparency!

It’s a huge plus for us that you can take them on an empty stomach and still avoid any uncomfy side effects. BUT we did notice some fishy-tasting burps whenever we took them without food (which is thanks to the vegan omega-3s sourced from ocean algae). If that freaks you out, just make sure you have a snack at some point after taking them.

Shop Essential for Women Multivitamins online.

Pros

  • multiple formulations with evidence-backed ingredients suited to age and reproductive status
  • third-party tested and USP-verified (18+)
  • moderately priced
  • vegan, gluten-free
  • no artificial colors or synthetic fillers

Cons

  • some reviewers complaints of fishy burps

Essential for Men Multivitamins

  • Price: $30 to 35 per month
  • Types offered: Multivitamin 18+, Multivitamin 50+
  • Certifications: N/A

Description and ingredients: The Essential for Men 18+ and Essential for Men 50+ are Ritual’s men’s products. Here’s a breakdown of the nutes:

18+50+
Vitamin A180 mcg180 mcg
Vitamin D350 mcg50 mcg
Vitamin E6.7 mg10 mg
Folate200 mcg400 mcg
Vitamin B128 mcg16 mcg
Magnesium30 mg60 mg
Zinc2.4 mg2.4 mg
Boron0.7 mg0.7 mg
Omega-3 (DHA)330 mg330 mg
Vitamin K90 mcg100 mcg

As you can tell, they’re super similar to the women’s vites — minus the iron. They also have some additional nutrients, including vitamin A and zinc.

Both of these are added to help meet the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) for vitamin A and zinc. The RDAs for men are higher than the ones for women, so it might be harder for men to get enough of these nutrients from food alone. Plus, they’re both super important for immune and eye health.

Reviews: In testing, peeps who tried the Men’s 18+ and the Men’s 50+ were big fans. They loved that the capsules weren’t chalky and that they had such a strong mint flavor. However, the mint flavor seems pretty “love it or hate it” — several reviewers say it’s waaay too overpowering.

  • Price: $35 per month
  • Types offered: prenatal and postnatal vitamins
  • Certifications: non-GMO

Boron0.7 mg0.7 mg
Omega-3 DHA350 mg350 mg
Vitamin K90 mcg90 mcg

* = Nutrients not found in Essential for Women Multivitamin

You’ll notice increased iron in the prenatal to help support your growing babe and all the extra red blood cells your body is creating.

You’ll also find choline, iodine, and biotin in both versions — three nutrients your body needs more of during pregnancy to support your growing baby. Biotin might also help if you’re dealin’ with postpartum hair loss.

In the postnatal, vitamin A, vitamin C, and zinc give you a little immunity boost in those (exhausting) postpartum days.

Reviews: Tons of reviewers say these taste great and are easy to keep down, but some say the fishy aftertaste from the omega-3s can be brutal if you have morning sickness. To avoid this, Ritual recommends taking them at night, and a few reviewers say it does the trick.

Essential Protein Daily Shakes

  • Price: $40 per month (15 servings)
  • Types offered: Daily Shake 18+, Daily Shake 50+, Daily Shake Pregnancy & Postpartum
  • Certifications: Informed-Sport

Description and ingredients: The newest additions to Ritual’s lineup are its Daily Shake protein powders. The company offers one for 18+, one for 50+, and one for pregnancy and postpartum. The shakes are made with plant-based protein, have a dreamy caramel vanilla flavor, and are sweetened with (sugar-free!) fermented sugarcane and monk fruit.

They contain 20 g of protein per serving and are low in fat and carbs:

Daily Shake 18+ Daily Shake 50+Daily Shake Pregnancy & Postpartum
Calories115120115
Total fat2 g2 g2 g
Total carbs3 g5 g4 g

Iron3 mg3 mg3 mg
Sodium290 mg220 mg 220 mg
Calcium HMBN/A1.5 gN/A
L-methionine493 mg493 mg493 mg

Ritual uses pea protein in all three protein powders. Pea protein is a great protein source that contains all nine essential amino acids naturally, but it’s low in one amino acid called methionine — which might make it less effective than animal-based protein.

To give these protein products a more complete amino acid profile (and therefore increase the protein quality), Ritual adds L-methionine to the powder.

The additions of choline and calcium support brain and bone health, which is always a plus. The Daily Shake 50+ also features calcium HMB, which helps preserve muscle mass and strength.

All the shakes are Informed Sport-certified — meaning they’ve been tested and proven free of banned substances, so they’re ideal for athletes.

Curiously, a month’s supply of the Daily Shake contains only 15 servings — so it’s more of an every-other-day shake. JK, JK — Ritual’s website says they’re all about food first, so there’s just enough protein powder in here to handle all your too-busy-for-breakfast mornings or post-workout stomach rumbles.

Reviews: Ritual also sent us the Daily Shake 18+ to take for a test run. To really get a feel for taste, we mixed it with plain old cold water.

It took a long shake in a shaker bottle to get the protein to mix in and frequent re-shakes to avoid sipping dry clumps of powder. But TBH, that didn’t really bother us too much.

The taste was surprisingly great. We normally cringe (read: gag) at the chalky taste of protein mixed with plain water, but this one was actually drinkable as hell.

We also love that it has an Informed-Sport certification and 20 g of protein. We’d def recommend this protein powder to anyone — vegan or not — for your daily protein shake.

Pros

  • plant-based protein with complete amino acid profile
  • additional nutrients for brain, bone, and muscle health

Limited selection

Although a lot of Ritual’s appeal lies in its simplicity, this approach does have some drawbacks.

For instance, there’s no way to personalize what you get to suit your specific nutritional needs (which, of course, go deeper than your age and sex). While other subscription vitamin services can offer specific solutions for stress, hormonal health, sleep, or skin concerns, Ritual is strictly multivitamins and protein powders.

More expensive than drugstore vitamins

While we wouldn’t consider Ritual products expensive, they are significantly pricier than drugstore vitamins.

And if you’re outfitting your whole family with Ritual vitamins and/or protein, this could easily cost you $100 to $200 per month.

This is something to keep in mind if you’re planning to sign up, especially since signing up for the subscription means you’ll be paying that amount monthly.

Ritual couldn’t be easier to get started with. It’s really straightforward to choose the product you need based on your age, sex, and pregnancy status.

And although it’s a monthly subscription service, you’re not required to get OR keep a subscription. You can cancel any time through your account settings on the Ritual website.

The company also offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can get your money back on your Ritual order if you’re not satisfied with the product.

Ritual is SO not alone in the world of online subscription vitamin companies. That market’s getting pretty crowded!

However, it is one of the few to offer only multivitamins and protein. And compared with the other two big names in vitamin subscriptions — Care/of and Persona — Ritual is the only one that says on its website that its products are third-party tested.

Here’s how Ritual stacks up to Care/of, Persona, and some other subscription vitamin companies.

Our process and why you should trust us

This article was written by a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN), who has tested Ritual products herself. Members of her fam have tried them too.

Additionally, Ritual sent one of our editors two products — the Essential for Her 18+ Multivitamin and the Essential Protein Daily Shake 18+ — to test hands-on.

We also put each of Ritual’s products through a thorough vetting process that checks for unsupported health and disease claims, shady business practices, FDA/FTC warning letters, and lawsuits involving a company’s products. We also made sure each company is transparent about the ingredients it uses, doesn’t use any illegal ingredients, and provides dosage information. All of Ritual’s products passed that vetting process.

After wrapping up our review, we sent this article to another registered dietitian (in this case, Sade Meeks, MS, RD,) for review.

So basically, you can feel good knowing that we put in the WORK to get you the deets you need to make a decision.

Are Ritual vitamins good?

It totally depends on your definition of “good,” but we think they’re a pretty solid option if you’re looking for a one-and-done multivitamin.

While some folks in certain situations or on certain diets may need to add more supplements to their routine, Ritual covers most of the bases for most people.

Ritual also third-party tests its products and is very transparent about its ingredients, which is a big plus.

Are Ritual vitamins FDA-approved?

Ritual vitamins are manufactured in a CGMP facility, meaning the facility and the manufacturing processes meet FDA requirements.

The FDA itself doesn’t approve or disapprove of dietary supplements, which is why third-party testing is so important.

Are Ritual vitamins third-party tested?

Yes! Ritual vitamins are third-party tested. A third-party laboratory tests every batch for contaminants like heavy metals, common allergens, and microbes.

Additionally, Ritual’s Multivitamin for Women 18+ is USP-verified. USP is a well-known third-party certification for dietary supplements. This can help you feel confident that what the label says is what’s actually in the bottle.

Bonus: All of Ritual’s Essential Protein products are Informed Sport-certified, so all you athletes can shake, blend, and sip (or chug — no judgment here) without worrying about banned ingredients.

Do doctors recommend Ritual?

Some do! And if your doc recommends you start popping a multi on the daily, Ritual looks like a pretty good choice.

What are the benefits of Ritual vitamins?

Ritual multivitamins can help to fill nutrient gaps just in case your diet isn’t perfect — and whose is?

They’re also super convenient since a Ritual multi is just a single product to keep track of. (And if you subscribe, you don’t have to worry about running out.)

Ritual also focuses on high quality, easy-to-absorb ingredients, so your multi actually stands a chance of doing you some good.

Ritual is a vitamin subscription company that makes multivitamins with major “lo-fi beats to relax and study to” vibes.

The company caters to men and women of all ages and also offers prenatal and postpartum multivitamins. Ritual has it all covered — AND they make protein powder too!

Ritual is moderately priced and is a really good option if you want a vitamin that contains only the ingredients you need and you value the convenience of subscription vitamins.
