Genetics might account for up to 33 percent of our happiness (or lack thereof), but that doesn’t mean we’re powerless to improve our own moods. Sometimes all it takes is a change in mindset — no matter how small — to turn a crappy day into a better one. To help you shift into a happier gear, we’ve rounded up five things from around the web that inspire and delight us, and we hope they’ll do the same for you. We’ll be sharing our favorite happiness-boosters each week, so be sure to check back — and please share your own either in the comments or the community!

1. This reunion between a dog and her owner — after a crazy rain storm, two years, and 700 miles

Last week, we wrote about the reunion of a young boy and his stuffed bunny. Now, something similarly awesome has happened on a more “adult” scale: Alma Dominguez finally reconnected with her dog Leia, who was lost during a rain storm in El Paso, Texas and resurfaced two years later in Denver, Colorado.

2. This thread on Quora about the loveliest things kids have ever said

A highlight:

Dad: You yelled at me, now you yourself are crying.
Daughter: That’s why I am crying that I yelled at you. Now, will you HELP me get over it?

4. This study that shows world poverty is shrinking

Obviously, there’s a lot of work still to be done in the effort to end poverty around the globe. But it’s really heartening news to know that some of the world’s poorest countries are experiencing reductions in poverty intensity. According to a new measuring system, the Multidimensional Poverty Index, if progress continues at the current rate, acute poverty could be eradicated over the next several decades.

5. This TED talk about one man’s unique way of appreciating the meaningful moments in his life

Director Cesar Kuriyama wanted a way to remember all the tiny, funny, sad, joyful moments in his life — so he decided to start filming one second of video every day and editing them all into a montage. It’s a unique — and delightful — means of recording what makes his life special on a daily basis.
