Coconut oil fans swear by using the oil to moisturize and hydrate the skin. But what about slathering coconut oil on those skin dimples called cellulite? Does it really help?
First off, there’s nothing to be ashamed of if you have cellulite. But if you want to reduce the appearance of it, coconut oil might help.
Right now there isn’t a ton of medical evidence that coconut oil reduces or reverses cellulite, but its properties may be beneficial in a number of ways when applied to the skin.
Cellulite forms when fat builds up and pushes through the connective tissue that clings to the skin and the muscles beneath it. This causes the skin to have a dimpling look or appear uneven. It’s more of a cosmetic annoyance since it’s not harmful or a health risk.
You’ll typically see cellulite on areas like the:
- butt
- hips
- thighs
- abdomen
Cellulite can happen to anyone, but is more prominent in women. Research shows between 80 and 90 percent of women will experience cellulite at some point in their lives after puberty.
Are you prone to cellulite?
Genetics are a huge factor when it comes to cellulite, but other things that may increase cellulite include:
- weight gain
- sedentary lifestyle
- hormonal factors
- diet
What does science really say about coconut oil for cellulite? Not much. But, a few studies show its moisturizing and collagen-boosting properties might help you out.
Coconut oil can make your skin feel super hydrated and smooth as a moisturizer (and who doesn’t love a fresh coconut scent).
An older study showed that virgin coconut oil can be just as effective as mineral oil when used as a moisturizer. This may help the appearance of these bumps by masking the dimples. *adds coconut oil to cart*
Virgin coconut oil has also been shown to have healing effects on the skin by boosting collagen production in the skin. Collagen is all about firming and tightening the skin, and it may help hide cellulite.
Are there other treatments for cellulite?
Creams and scrubs are advertised nonstop for cellulite, but there isn’t really a miracle cream to get rid of cellulite once and for all (they also can be $$$).
A healthy way that won’t break the bank is to add more exercise to your routine. By exercising more and toning the muscles, this may prevent future cellulite.
If you’re cool with a more painful and more expensive route, lipomassage or radiofrequency lasers are an option.
Moisturize the skin
As we mentioned earlier, coconut oil can be very hydrating for your skin. It can be a great body lotion alternative for peeps with normal to dry skin that need to lock in moisture.
Tighten the skin
Coconut oil is full of antioxidants that can help eliminate damaging free radicals hurting your skin (aka cause wrinkles). Along with its moisturizing and collagen-boosting properties, coconut oil hydrates the skin to help tighten and prevent sagging.
Reduce symptoms of eczema
Studies have shown virgin coconut oil has anti-inflammatory properties that can help the skin barrier. This in turn can be used as a natural remedy for eczema to moisturize the skin and reduce inflammation and discomfort.
Wound healing
OK, so don’t ditch the Neosporin just yet. But, studies have found that treating wounds with virgin coconut oil speeds up the healing time, improves antioxidants, and increases levels of collagen (which is an important protein that helps heal wounds!)
Stretch mark treatment
Coconut oil can’t actually remove those stretch marks, but it can reduce the appearance of stretch marks by hydrating and tightening the skin.
Straight up eat coconut oil
Try using coconut oil as your main cooking oil. The mix of the fatty acids may have positive benefits to your health such as boosting fat loss, improving heart health, reducing hunger, and helping brain function.
Coconut oil moisturizer and cellulite massage
Rub coconut oil between your hands and massage it directly onto any areas you have cellulite. You can also put any excess on your arms and legs (really anywhere) that needs some extra moisture.
Overnight coconut oil face mask
Who doesn’t want a fabulous glow on a moisturized face? Treat yo’ self with a coconut oil overnight mask.
Liquify 1 tablespoon of coconut oil in your hands (it solidifies when cool) and gently rub onto your face. If some parts are heavier, dab with a soft tissue. Avoid getting it around your eyes and leave overnight. Try this remedy once a week.
Dry brushing with coconut oil
Dry brushing can help your circulation and exfoliate your skin. The best way to dry brush with coconut oil is directly after a hot shower while the pores are still open.
Lather your body in coconut oil from head to toe or the spots you want to focus on. Use a natural fiber brush, moving it in upward circular motions.
Coffee and sugar scrub with coconut oil
Calling all coffee lovers! This scrub will smell so good it will have your mouth watering, trying to locate the nearest Starbucks.
It’s a simple natural scrub that works as an exfoliant on your skin. This can reduce the appearance of cellulite and make your skin soft and smooth.
- 1/4 cup of ground coffee
- 3 tablespoons brown sugar or regular sugar
- 2 to 3 tablespoons of warm coconut oil
Mix together and place in a container or jar. Use this scrub and let sit for up to 15 minutes before rinsing off. Do this method 2 to 3 times a week for best results.
Mix essential oils with coconut oil
If you love the smell of essential oils in your diffuser, you can mix skin-friendly oils like frankincense or lavender with coconut oil. Then apply the mixture to the areas of the skin you want to firm up or moisturize. (Just be sure to patch test any new-to-you oils, first!).

If you’re allergic to coconut, you can also be allergic to its oil. Be sure to always do a patch test on a small part of your skin to see if you have any type of reaction. If your skin itches, is red, or breaks out in hives, stop using it ASAP and contact a doctor immediately.
Oil on the skin can also cause acne, so use coconut oil sparingly as you experiment with it on your skin. If there’s any irritation, refrain from using it.
Too much of the oil may cause acne or bumps on other parts of the skin. So if you have oily, acne-prone skin, coconut oil may be a big no for your face.
Another thing you might want to think about is the consumption of coconut oil as a supplement. Coconut oil is high in saturated fat and it’s easy to use too much. Definitely consult a doctor before consuming large amounts of coconut oil as a supplement.
By no means is coconut oil a miracle cure for cellulite. Changing up your exercise routine and diet might help, but really it’s up to genetics.
Don’t be afraid to love your body (including your cellulite!). But, if you want to reduce the appearance of your cellulite, a natural coconut oil remedy might help by moisturizing the skin.
