This month’s challenge may look simple, but there is definitely nothing simple about the burpee! This one exercise requires a squat, jump, push-up, another jump, squat, and one final explosive jump (phew!). As a result, no muscle is left behind. It’s felt great taking care of ourselves and others for the past few monthly challenges, but with spring around the corner (Yes, it is. If you dream it… ), it’s time to get moving. That’s why March is all about the burpees496 of them, to be exact.

There’s no doubt that burpees are intense; doing just a single rep requires a ton of movement and places huge demands on the burpee-doer’s cardiovascular fitness. But that’s a good thing. Studies have shown that when it comes to exercise, intensity matters: The more intense the movement, the greater the post-exercise elevation in metabolism and improved cardiovascular health.

Now that we’ve promised you the conditioning tool to end all conditioning tools, it’s time to get to it. This month’s challenge is foolproof! You’ll start by doing just one burpee on March 1, and then just add one more every day until the grand finale of 31 consecutive burpees. When it’s all over, you’ll have completed 496 burpees total! Sure, that’s a terrifying amount of burpees, but just take it one day at a time, remember to breathe, and focus on each movement rather than the final number.
