If slipping into a warm bath is your idea of nirvana, you’re probably well acquainted with the popular bathing accessory known as the bath bomb.

Now — because CBD is literally popping up everywhere — you can also find those sweet-smelling balls of salts, herbs, and essential oils with a healthy dose of this nifty cannabinoid in them.

Whether you’re looking to slide into a post-bath snooze, soothe your achy muscles after exercise, breathe better, hydrate your skin, or just chill TF out, CBD bath bombs could be the perfect addition to your self-care routine.

All by itself, soaking in water (aka hydrotherapy) has benefits for your skin, heart, respiratory system, and immunity, among other things. (Yes, there is scientific research on the benefit of baths!)

What’s more, soaking in mineralized water (like at a hot spring or a home bath infused with Epsom salts or magnesium flakes) may carry additional benefits for relieving pain and helping with a range of muscle and joint issues, but more research is needed to back that up.

Most bath bombs are formulated with one or more of these potentially beneficial minerals. So what’s the benefit of adding CBD to the mix?

Topical CBD doesn’t actually enter your bloodstream, so it’s unlikely to have systemic or internal effects. But because you also have cannabinoid receptors in your skin, soaking in a CBD-infused bath could help soothe inflammation, moisturize, and even help with acne.

CBD bath bombs usually clock in at a range of 25 to 100 milligrams or more per unit. If you’re new to incorporating CBD at bath time, start with one in the low-to-mid-range (between 25 and 50 milligrams of CBD per bath bomb) and see how you feel.

If you’re looking for a more dramatic effect, you can bump up to a product with 100 milligrams of CBD, but expect to pay more for the higher cannabinoid content. In any case, using a CBD bath bomb is totally safe — you can’t OD on CBD, and it won’t give you any psychoactive or “high” feeling.

Using a CBD bath bomb is easy peasy. Draw yourself a warm bath, drop in your bath bomb, and enjoy the fizziness as the product dissolves.

Immerse yourself for at least 20 minutes so that your skin can soak up as many of the beneficial cannabinoids and minerals as possible. This form of CBD isn’t edible, though, so make sure not to splash your CBD bath water into your eyes or mouth.

The FDA hasn’t set firm parameters for the testing and labeling of CBD products, so the quality and strength of CBD products out there varies quite a bit. We did the research and included only bath bomb products that are:

  • THC-free (these bombs contain 0.3 percent of THC or less)
  • made from U.S.-grown hemp (because it’s safer and more traceable)
  • tested by a third-party lab to be sure that the product’s total CBD content is on par with advertising
  • made with clean ingredients (organic, in many cases) and without toxins like parabens and benzenes
  • loved and reviewed well by customers

10. Pure Kana Activated Charcoal CBD Bath Bomb

Made with coconut oil, sunflower oil, and even cucumber oil, this bath bomb helps moisturize, but may also make your bathtub a bit slippery.

  • CBD (cannabidiol). A nonpsychoactive molecular cousin of THC that won’t get you high but may help you relax and de-stress.
  • hemp. A cannabis variety that’s naturally low in THC (0.3 percent or less) and from which most CBD products are made.
  • broad-spectrum CBD. A form of CBD extract that’s free of THC but contains other, potentially helpful cannabis plant compounds. Broad-spectrum CBD may be more therapeutic than CBD isolate.
  • CBD isolate. A THC-free extract containing CBD and no other cannabis compounds.

Because quality definitely matters, cannabis dispensaries and natural foods stores are usually better places to buy CBD bath products than gas stations or big-box stores.

You can also shop for CBD online, but be sure the company provides an up-to-date certificate of analysis (COA) from a third-party lab that shows the product’s total CBD and THC content (if applicable).

Detailed lab analyses, if included, should also show that the product is free of molds, pesticides, solvents, and other contaminants. The COA should be available on the company’s website, or by email on request.

Make sure you also understand each product’s:

  • sourcing (U.S.-grown hemp is recommended)
  • CBD extraction method (i.e., whether it’s made using CBD isolate or broad-spectrum CBD)
  • full range of ingredients, including any artificial fragrances or colors

tl;dr

  • The CBD in bath bombs doesn’t have internal effects but may help soothe your skin as part of a relaxing bath time ritual.
  • CBD bath bombs vary widely in quality and total CBD content.
  • Check labels and buy from reputable companies to make sure your product contains the advertised amount of CBD and is free of unsavory additives.
