The Simplest Way to Measure Exercise Intensity
The so-called “talk test” determines breath frequency, which is tied to heart rate. To determine the intensity of a workout without fancy equipment, say a short sentence aloud (the Pledge of Allegiance is just about the right length). The reason behind acting like a crazy person at the gym? Speaking aloud comfortably indicates that the exercise is moderately intense. If you’re panting and can’t speak easily, the workout is considered vigorous.
