I think a good place to start is to take stock of the foods/ingredients you a) love to eat (including stuff for special treats you love but might not be eating all the time) and b) want to eat (maybe you want to eat healthier or just try new cuisines?) and from there, you can figure out a grocery list of things to buy every week, plus some extra options for different occasions, or whenever you want to switch it up.

Once you know what sort of selection you're dealing with it's fairly easy to have a look around on the internet, in your cookbooks, magazines, or even favourite restaurant menus and find recipes that more or less fit your ingredient collection. Start with a few "staple" recipes that are easily customizable (i.e. stir fry), and you can build up from there. Keeping a variety of different oils and spices definitely makes things easier; you can quickly make new seasoning mixes or sauces to completely change a dish that is essentially the same.
