In an emotional video (yep, grab the tissues) on NBC’s Today show, Lady Gaga shares—for the first time ever—that she has a mental illness. While visiting with LGBT youth at a homeless shelter in New York, the star opened up about struggling with PTSD after she was raped. Many of the young adults she met with also deal with mental health issues, and Gaga shared the things that help her cope: meditation, support from her family, and medication.

We’re amazed by Gaga’s bravery in sharing her story, and we hope her words empower others to talk about the strategies they use to manage their mental health. Because sharing what works for us could help someone else while also lessening the stigma surrounding mental illness.
