This week (Sept 16-21) is National Wellness Week, a chance for people across the globe to focus on improving their health and well-being, and to well, become a “Greatist!” Similar to our mission, Wellness Week promotes the importance of creating a healthy and happy living environment while encouraging lawmakers to adopt policies to facilitate healthier lifestyles.

Thanks to the Pan American Health Organization and the World Economic Forum, Wellness Week is in full force, with over 20 countries across the Americas participating.

From Well to Swell! — Your Action Plan

Making healthy choices doesn’t have to be tough. Try out these few simple ways to get in on the Wellness Week action:

  • Start simple. It’s the little things that add up, like choosing a healthy salad over a sandwich for lunch, or walking or biking to work instead of driving. And don’t forget to carve out some “you” time, whether that’s meditating, journaling, or getting a few more zzz’s.
  • Learn the facts. Non-communicable diseases (a.k.a. NCDs), including cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and chronic respiratory disease, are responsible for more than half of all deaths in the world. To learn more about why NCDs are a global crisis and how to increase awareness, head here.
  • Take a Stand. Write a letter to your U.N. Ambassador urging lawmakers to include NCD prevention in the national strategic plan. With this sample template— and the right contacts— making your voice heard is easier than ever.
