As far as holidays go, Halloween really lucks out when it comes to timing. It’s still warm enough for summery flavors, such as citrus, apple, pomegranate, and ginger, to fly. But we’re deep enough into fall to break out brandy, whiskey, and all the autumn spices that keep us feeling cozy from head to toe. Check out these spooky cocktails—they’re about 18 steps up from the punch of our youth.

1. Dracula’s Drink

This blood-toned concoction sets a ghoulish tone for any gathering. The recipe calls for two different types of soda, but if you’re trying to cut down on your carbonated beverage intake, simply swap out pomegranate soda for pomegranate juice.

2. Smashing Pumpkin

This recipe calls for a pumpkin reduction, which sounds intimidating, but once we realized it just meant simmering the ingredients for 40 minutes (and then adding bourbon), we were all in. It doesn’t hurt that the fruit (yes, pumpkin is a fruit) is packed with antioxidants and vitamins. A dash of celery bitters helps mute the sweetness of the reduction. But if you don’t keep a fully stocked bar at home, don’t fret—skip the bitters and you’re left with a slightly more sugary drink.

3. The Smashing Pumpkin Martini

Continuing with the pumpkin theme, this recipe shares its name with the previous drink but takes things in an entirely different direction—and that direction is alcohol. Featuring rum, cognac, and two types of liqueur, this orange cocktail will leave you feeling bewitched.

4. Blood Red Rosé-Rose Cocktail

This drink is the perfect way to ease yourself into fall and is just plain beautiful—even better if you can only set it on black surfaces. Mixing rosé with rose syrup and grapefruit slices hits all the sweet (and slightly sour) notes; a dash of whiskey gives it a wintry feel.

5. Pomegranate-Apple Brandy Cocktails

We’ve got blood on in our hands, and we couldn’t be happier. This apple-flavored brandy cocktail is a quick crowd-pleaser, thanks to its mixer: the super-good superfood pomegranate juice. A dash of grenadine and blue food coloring give the drink its special sanguine color.

6. Zomborita Cocktail

Apple cider, St. Germain, and cinammon put an autumn spin on the classic margarita, while the muddled apple and lemon make for a gritty, convincingly flesh-like texture. There’s only one time of year this can fly, and we’re taking advantage.

7. The Sludge Monster Martini

Imagine a green juice: spinach, apple, orange juice, and lemon. Now add vodka and triple sec, and you’ve got this (monster) mash-up that lets you feel healthy(ish) while boozing. If it could cast a spell to avoid hangovers, it’d be the perfect drink.

8. Pumpkin Ale Fall Cocktail

If the beverages above seem like too much work, we’ve got you covered with this two-ingredient wonder. All you need is cinnamon schnapps and pumpkin ale. For full effect, coat the rim of your glass in honey and cinnamon sugar. Beer will never seem the same.

9. Blood Orange Sangria

Thought the grapes-as-eyeballs trick was just for kids in elementary school? Nope. Add a few grapes to the bottom of these blood-orange concoctions, and you’ve got a more anatomical spin on sangria.
