There’s too much Internet—like this pen that writes with spices—and too little time. That’s why we curate a list of the best of the best (a.k.a. “the Greatist”) things we’ve come across on the Web this week. In other words, it’s the stuff we’d email/gchat/tweet/text you immediately if we were besties. While we’ll never stop striving to bring our readers amazing content on a daily basis, we know not all the best stuff comes from us.

1. The Allure of the 5-Minute Beer Mile. On Your Mark. Get Set. Slosh. (Outside)

Throwing a cold one back after setting a personal record on the track sounds like a logical way to celebrate. But drinking that beer mid-run? Not so much. The beer mile and all its glory—four times around a track where runners chug a 12-ounce beer at the beginning of every lap—has attracted a surprising amount of attention in recent years. Our favorite part about this new athletic trend: One of the top female competitors is a 45-year-old mother of six with a knack for chugging beer.

2. These Are the Food Trends That Will Dominate Restaurant Menus in 2015 (Vox)

Every year, spice company McCormick releases its flavor forecast, a Farmer’s Almanac of sorts, only this one is for your taste buds. A few standouts from this year: cookie flavors in other desserts (chocolate chip cookie biscotti—yes, please!), slow cooked meats (break out the sous vide), and more puréed foods (it’s not just for infants anymore).

3. The Stereotype-Driven Business of Selling Nutrition Bars to Women (Racked)

Nutrition bars take up entire isles of supermarkets and specialty food stores. And they come in every shape and size—gluten-free, low-carb, high-protein, and, oh yeah, specially designed for women. Sure, Clif Bars and Power Bars might be subconsciously marketed toward men with advertisements about giving you the fuel for endurance activities. But Luna and thinkThin bars are explicit in their target demographic: busy women who don’t have time to think about preparing healthy food. Filling that need seems noble, until you realize that advertising these bars as guilt-free and smallerin portion size might actually work to perpetuate hurtful stereotypes.

4. How to Wash Your Running Shoes (Geek Fitness)

You finally found the perfect pair of running shoes. But after a few months of use (and all of the inevitable sweating) they start to smell—OK, reek. But how do you wash your shoes without ruining your precious kicks? Luckily, our friends over at Geek Fitness put together a definitive guide. The low down: washers (even dishwashers) are fine, but steer clear of the dryer (a.k.a. shoe warping machine).

5. Your Grandmother’s Guide to Pot (New York)

Weed is everywhere these days—vape was recently declared the word of the year. Heck, even The New York Times editorial board is in favor of legalization. But with all of these changes, most people—from stoners to straight edges—know little about pot. So our friends over at New York magazine put together a handy guide, complete with a pot glossary, edibles cookbook, and the science behind your high.
